DEAR INTERFAITH CLIMATE CHANGE LEADERS,

We invite you and other leaders from your congregation and elsewhere to attend our Earth Day Interfaith Gathering, which will launch the Contra Costa Interfaith Climate Action Network (ICAN).

All the world’s major faith groups and religious leaders have made powerful statements on the reality of climate change and the fact that human actions are contributing significantly. Catholics, Protestants, Jews, Hindus, Sikhs, Muslims, Buddhists and indigenous peoples have all spoken out on the moral responsibility we have to take action.

We all face impacts of climate change on our region, from poor air quality to more heat and drought to rising sea levels. More action is urgently needed.  Many in our county’s faith community have taken steps to lessen their contribution to this global challenge and others are in the midst of contemplating first actions.  Our faith traditions have the power of moral authority on climate, giving us a special role and influence in speaking out and acting on this issue.  We know that doing nothing betrays our deepest values.

This is the moment for us to accelerate our attention to this challenge.  The scale and urgency of climate change requires us to act not only as individuals and congregations, but also collectively.  We can learn from and support each other, better coordinate our work and identify new opportunities for action.  Join us at this important event to connect our actions.
